Hamdhoon Hameed, member of DRP parliamentary group and former President Gayoom’s nephew has indirectly called on the DRP to revitalize its alliance with PA.

Speaking at a gathering by the Ihuthijaaj movement, Hamdhoon, a known supporter of Umar’s call for a primary to decide its presidential candidate and who is also closely associated with his uncle and PA leader Abdulla Yaameen’s political thinking said that the things DRP failed to do when DRP was the government cannot be done single-handedly now. He also highlighted the importance of working with all the parties which are willing to stand against the government. He also stressed such collaborative action as the only way to bring the present government to its knees.

Speaking at the event DRP’s deputy leader Umar Naseer said that opposition’s sole aim is to oust the present government. “Make no mistake, our goal is to oust the government…… very soon you will find me breaking into the presidential residence after concluding a meeting like this. I know all of you will join me. I just need 10 seconds to jump from the presidential residence’s gate” Umar articulated.

Ibrahim Shareef, another deputy leader of the party has said last week that the present government would not be made responsible through constitutional means, implying that DRP wishes to employ unconstitutional means to make the government responsible. President Nasheed has said that the country’s hard-won democratic system should always be respected by all political parties and warned that the government and political parties which support the government would come out with its full force against any such unconstitutional and undemocratic action.
