Nobody lived here until the 17 hundreds, which was when it was ruled by the Dutch. After the Dutch left it then the french took control. It later came under the rule of the British as an element of the Napoleonic wars. It ultimately became an independent country in nineteen sixty 8. It is a brilliantly gorgeous island.
